Just FYI. I know we have won this battle (for now), but I wanted to share
this.

Hi, Rachel. Thanks for your inquiry - and for actually taking the time to
think through what you are asking. I have received some form letters about
this issue, that contain only accusations and conclusions of wrongdoing.
I can't respond to those, but I do want to respond to your personal note.

Unfortunately I can't be very helpful to you. I can't speak for Royse &
Brinkmeyer, because I am not involved in or in charge of the operation of
it. I do have a family connection, though, and I am familiar with most of
the staff and believe them to be good people.

As you no doubt know, I am a member of Champaign's Human Relations
Commission, and I am committed to its mission of eliminating bigotry and
unfair discrimination in our city. Because of my family connection with
Royse & Brinkmeyer, I would not be involved if there were to be any HRC
activities related to this matter. But I can say that anyone with concerns
about discrimination of any nature in Champaign is welcome to contact the
City of Champaign Community Relations office, as a first step toward
resolution.

I appreciate your interest in fairness and your willingness to advocate for
it.

Dear Ms. Royse:

Hello,

Through a friend of mine, I recently learned that Royse & Brinkmeyer
Properties refused to renew the leases of the Congolese residents who live
in the apartment buildings they own along South Mattis Avenue.

My understanding is that the landlord hasn't had a good experience with
these tenants and I'd like to know what created the bad experience. I'd
appreciate a letter back explaining a little more about why the Congolese
residents of your buildings are no longer eligible for lease renewal and
what that is based on.

I look forward to your response.

Rachel
