Subject: Meeting on Frdiay Night

Please plan to attend  (and bring a friend)
Georgetown and Sunrise Coal:  Update on Georgetown's Water and proposed coal mine near Homer, IL
Friday Aug 2
6:00 pm
Mary Miller Jr. High School, 414 W. West Street
Georgetown, IL

Note:  Questions must be submitted in writing at the beginning of the meeting; the mayor's daughter will sort through them and
pass them off to either the mayor, a  Sunrise Coal PR person, or the engineering consultants to answer. Unfortunately, the Mayor of Georgetown is not allowing spontaneous questions from the floor.  Please prepare for this meeting by jotting down your questions   on small separate sheets of paper.  For  last minute questions, we'll have paper and pencils on hand at the meeting.

Here are some questions you might consider asking:
Why is this meeting being held on a Friday night at supper time when many locals  need to be at the fair with their entries; and why did the newspaper article say they  wanted to discourage debate?  If not now,  when  do the citizens of Georgetown get  to have some input to this important decision?

Why did the city of Georgetown circumvent the Public Meetings Act and meet two by two with Sunrise Coal?  Whose idea was that
and why were the people of Georgetown not involved in this decision?

The water contract with Sunrise Coal states that after a year, Sunrise will be able to buy water (up to 500,000 gallons per day) at a
discounted rate.  Does this mean that the mine will be paying less than the residents of Georgetown and if so, why is that? Why should
they get water cheaper than our own citizens?

Georgetown's City Hall  has not produced any evidence of a water study being performed prior to negotiating with Sunrise Coal.
How is it  that Georgetown could  engage in such a significant water deal without having done a study before hand to ensure there is enough
water to meet the needs of the area?

What is the town of Georgetown doing to prevent contaminated water from coal washing (polluted with arsenic, mercury, lead and selenium to name a few) from being discharged into the Little Vermilion and the Salt Fork Rivers when we know that it poses a threat to
public health, aquatic life, and recreation?

The town of Fairmont has stated that they may want to buy water from Georgetown but the coal mine will have priority over them
should such a deal occur.  Why should a coal mine that is using etremely high quality drinking water to wash coal have priority over
people who need drinking water?

How much more money will need to be spent on a regular basis for the water treatment plant to continually supply more than twice as much water as it is today?  In other words, what's the actual profit margin going to be from this water sale?

What's the expected lifetime of the water treatment plant given that it is now going to be supplying more than twice as much water on a daily basis?

Did each alderman have a chance to fully read the final contract and discuss it with the city attorney?

If Sunrise Coal, LLC suddenly loses some investors and declares bankruptcy, how will the City of Georgetown manage to maintain 12+ miles of pipeline?

Does the water infrastructure have the necessary level of integrity to continually keep the water at the furthest point (25+ miles away) within EPA drinking water standards?

How responsive will Sunrise Coal be to fixing problems on the water line that may leave new customers without water, while the mine uses its backup water source?  The City of Georgetown is now depending on Sunrise Coal to make sure the City meets EPA water quality.  Who's in charge?

What is the origin of the water that will be sold by Georgetown to Sunrise Coal (which aquifer) and is this the same source for water used
currently to wash coal at their Carlisle coal mine in Indiana?  If it is the same source as Georgetown's, how much water is being
drawn for the Carlisle mine?

Stand Up to Coal has sent you this email  because we know believe you have a right to be kept informed
of important developments that affect your water, your health, your air, and land.
