Subject: Upcoming Stand Up to Coal Events

Hello everyone,

This June is going to be an important month in building power to block the Bulldog Mine. Likewise, there will be several opportunities for your action and involvement.

Please join us at the following four events this month (listed with additional details below):

(1) The meeting of the ELUC committee of the Champaign County Board where a resolution opposing water withdrawals from the Salt Fork will be considered,

(2) An outdoor concert in Champaign where we will have the opportunity to gather petition signatures and build public support,

(3) A public informational meeting on the Bulldog Mine in Champaign, and

(4) The Champaign County Board meeting where we will once again push for the sustainable water use resolution

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

We hope to see you at these events. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Jonathan Ashbrook for Stand Up to Coal

1. ELUC Meeting -- 6:00 pm Thursday June 6th
Lyle Shields Meeting Room, Brookens Administrative Center,  1776 E. Washington St., Urbana

After tabling it at their last meeting, the Environment and Land Use Committee (ELUC) of the Champaign County Board will consider a  resolution opposing water withdrawals from the Salt Fork River for washing coal  at Hallador Energy and Sunrise Coal's proposed Bulldog mine southeast of Homer.

This will be an important meeting with a need for a strong public presence. The link to the agenda is included below:

Further information:

In April, the News-Gazette reported that  Sunrise Coal has approached the Urbana Champaign Sanitary District (UCSD) with a request  to guarantee that their Urbana sewage treatment plant will discharge between 325,000 to 540,000 gallons per day that the mine would withdraw from the Salt Fork River to wash coal at their proposed coal mine.

Clean sewage treatment plant effluent from UCSD  helps protect the health of the Salt Fork River , particularly during low flow times of the year. After months of deliberation, the Homer Village Board came to a  unanimous decision against selling raw water  to Sunrise coal, determining that the area's water resources should not be used to wash coal. Area residents and farmers are concerned that Sunrise's underground coal mine and surface coal washing and waste disposal will deplete water resources, pollute the Salt Fork River, and damage farmland.

The County Board has a crucial opportunity protect Champaign County's clean water and healthy farmland, by voting yes on the resolution opposing water sales to to the proposed coal mine.

TAKE ACTION:   Let Your  County Board members  know you support protecting the Salt Fork River and farmland from coal mine - ask them to vote yes on the resolution!

As a community partner at the event, Prairie Rivers Network will be speaking about their work to protect clean water and healthy rivers in Illinois.

PRN will be tabling on several campaigns, including the Bulldog Mine. 4. Champaign County Board Meeting -- 7:00 pm Thursday June 20th
Lyle Shields Meeting Room, Brookens Administrative Center,  1776 E. Washington St., Urbana

The Champaign County Board will vote on a resolution stating that:

    1. The Champaign County Board opposes water withdrawals from the Salt Fork of the Vermilion River in Champaign County for coal mine use in Vermilion and Champaign Counties.

    2. Champaign County will continue to actively comment on any future plans of operations regarding water withdrawals and water discharges submitted on any such mine, including during any formal review by agencies and offices of the Federal and State Governments.

Like the ELUC meeting, it will be crucial that we have strong public presence at the board meeting. The full text of the resolution can be found on p. 51 and 52 of the extended agenda:  http://www.co.champaign.il.us/countybd/ELUC/2013/130606agendafull.pdf
