          Take Action
Make this victory count by standing up to Medicare cuts!

      David,

Last week, we achieved a major victory when White House sources announced that the Chained CPI—a Social Security cut that would get worse over time—would not be in the president’s upcoming budget. This is huge. This cut has been at the center of all of the “Grand Bargain” talk over the last few years—President Obama even included it in his budget last year.

The bad news is, while the administration indicated that Social Security was safe, there's still bad news for Medicare in the budget.

Amid the cheering over Social Security, many overlooked an insidious cut to our earned benefits—a practice called “means testing” for Medicare, which would force middle class Seniors to pay more for a program they’ve already spent their whole lives paying into. Out of pocket health care costs already consume more than a third of the average Social Security check. If that amount increases, that’s just as bad as the Social Security cuts we’ve been fighting.

Tell President Obama and Congress that a cut to Medicare is a cut to Social Security—and we won’t stand for either.

The fact that the president has now taken Social Security cuts out of his budget is a testament to the incredible work we have all done together. All of the petitions signed and delivered and all of the phone calls made have led directly to this. So thank you.

You deserve a hand for this victory. Thanks to you, the conversation in Washington is about how to expand our Social Security system instead of cutting it.

Social Security Works members have been on the front lines in protecting our earned benefits. Whether it is defeating the Chained CPI, or protecting Medicare, you continue to make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans.

But we can’t afford to rest. Wall Street billionaires will continue to apply pressure to our elected officials to cut earned benefits. And we have to make sure that the president and Congress are on our side.

We must use the momentum from this victory to ensure that Medicare “means testing” doesn’t undermine the future of our earned benefits.

Tell Congress and the president – a cut to Medicare is a cut to Social Security!

The news this week has been unbelievable. Thank you for getting us this far. It wouldn’t be possible without you.
