People's Action invites you to a wine, cheese and dessert fundraiser
featuring award-winning journalist and cultural historian Jeff Biggers, as
he takes us on a journey from coal and fracking to climate action. *
Biggers will read excerpts from his new book, *Reckoning at Eagle Creek:
The Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland *and his experiences with the
extraction industry. *Reckoning at Eagle Creek* is set in the ruins of his
family’s strip-mined homestead in the Shawnee National Forest in southern
Illinois. Biggers delivers a deeply personal portrait of the largely
overlooked human and environmental costs of our nation’s dirty energy
policy over the past two centuries. *As we prepare for the probable rollout
of fracking in Illinois, it's important to see how the extractive industry
has already gone wrong in the Land of Lincoln.*
Our friends at S.A.F.E. (Southern Illinoisans Against Fracturing our
Environment said Jeff's events in southern Illinois were "wonderful" and
that "he will entertain your guests at this book reading."

Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love
- *“As this fine book makes clear, coal has always and ever been a
curse, poisoning everything and everyone it touches—right up to the climate
on which we depend for our daily bread. What a story!”* —Bill McKibben,
Founder 350.org and author of Earth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet
- *"...a tour de force."*--Amy Goodman, Democracy Now
