Tomorrow, Tues, 12 noon to 1pm Message-ID: [image: image.png] At Park Street and Broadway , we'll rally to save our geese! The UPD claims that killing the geese is the only way to manage their overpopulation. This is not true---we've sent the UPD plans for geese control that are humane, effective, economical. Let's talk about these. Come tomorrow, and at the end of our rally we'll describe some of the ways we can manage our geese without killing then. *Not So Good News:* Now Champaign Park District wants to learn more about the "Charity harvest" method of geese control (kill them, give their 'meat' to the poor) that Urbana will use, unless we halt them. CPD has been consulting with UPD to learn how. * Good N*ews: our 2 online petitions have collected over *7400 signatures* of residents who want the geese saved in just 8 days! (Urbana has a population of 44,000 people--so , wow!) Please sign these 2 petitions: https://www.change.org/p/derek-liebert-urgent-tell-the-urbana-park-district-upd-to-cancel-their-massacre-of-geese https://www.idausa.org/campaign/wild-animals-and-habitats/latest-news/slitting-the-necks-of-geese-is-no-harvest-for-charity/?fbclid=IwAR3j9zW95qoRKEb4slKSZS7oeN9eoslZDYZ3Jb2v9I1puxLJH6bRGd3Ti3Y See you tomorrow! Derek Liebert and his crew for the past few years have tried many humane methods to reduce the population such as egg addling, hazing by laser and border collie/trainer. These methods work effectively but they cannot control the geese that come onto Crystal Lake Park from the surrounding areas. Often these areas are where they nest. These eggs also need to be addled but the UPD has no jurisdiction over these neighboring areas. As an outside group we can provide this service, free. This will create a complete comprehensive plan going forward to control the geese population in the entire area and assist the Urbana Park District to reduce their goose population. We are a volunteer group of passionate and energetic goose lovers. We recognize that there is an overpopulation problem but we do not agree that killing the geese is the answer. Give us one year and we will volunteer our time to addle the eggs at Crystal Lake Park. Further, we will reach out to the surrounding golf course, church and property owners to identify nesting areas and addle those eggs every spring. We feel confident that the results will be significant and with each year more improvement. The reason why there are so many geese coming from nearby areas is that Crystal Lake Park provides the perfect combination of manicured grass and access to water. The best method which will work to improve the quality of the Crystal Lake Park experience will also improve the neighboring areas and create goodwill in the entire community. St Louis GeesePeace President, Nancy Schnell has offered to come to Urbana to train us in egg addling and guide us as we begin. She and her group have been volunteering in the St Louis and surrounding area for 19 years and have a tremendously successful program which we will adapt. This is our offer, but it is a one time offer. We do not condone the so-called ?charity harvest? and should you choose to go ahead with it in the next few weeks this offer will be withdrawn. Please consider looking at this issue with this new information and vote to not kill the geese. One of their favorite destinations is Crystal Lake Park, which provides the conditions they love. While they stay in the park, the geese leave feces, which bothers the Urbana Park District. So, they have contacted the USDA to kill 100 geese in an effort to get rid of the problem. Their plan will not work. The Park district has not considered that geese pass through the park from surrounding areas. The USDA will only be killing whatever geese happen to be in the park during the time when they show up. The very next day, a new flock will be there again, as if nothing happened. Only three things will keep geese out of Crystal Lake Park: (1) making it less attractive to them, (2) giving them someplace else to go instead, and (3) expanding nest management to the surrounding areas. These three things *must* be combined. The park district has already tried some deterrent strategies with limited success, but they have made a few crucial mistakes. Their nesting management program has not addressed geese from outside the park. These are the geese that travel into the park every day, leaving feces. They have tried habitat modification, but the most important program?the planting project?did not begin until last fall. These plants take two to three years to deter geese. Lastly, the UPD has not set up a tolerance zone where geese can go instead of Crystal Lake Park. Luckily, the UPD has received an offer from local volunteers to set up a tolerance zone north of I-74. Volunteers will also expand nesting management to surrounding areas and bring in a ?goosinator? to make the park less favorable to geese. The recent planting project will cause taller grasses to grow, making the area even less alluring to geese. On its own, a goose slaughter will not work. When combined with these other strategies, it is unnecessary. So, why conduct costly, mindless violence when volunteers can enact effective, humane solutions free of charge? -- *Susan Parenti* *Educational Coordinator * *The School for Designing a Society *www.designingasociety.net *Like us on Facebook !* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our group found that out at around 9:30am, when one of us said she hadn't seem any geese this morning in the park. So then we all went out and looked for them in the park?no geese, no geese, no geese. WE called the official ?killing? office, and found out it was true: 150 geese killed by an order signed by Derek Liebert and Tim Bartlett of UPD. Our attorney applied for an injunction (which is an order to stop what you?re doing?in this case, stop your plans of killing the geese) at 9:30am--4 hours after the geese were killed.
