<B>From: </B>"Jonathan Ashbrook" <jonashbrook@gmail.com><BR><B>Sent: </B>Monday, February 11, 2013 12:19:36 PM<BR><B>Subject: </B>Once More: Pivotal Vote in Homer Tonight on Water Deal With Coal Mine<BR><BR>Greetings,<BR><BR><SPAN>Month after month, we have continued to come back to the Homer Village Board meetings to convey a simple message - the people of this community do not support Sunrise's proposed coal mine, which threatens local water resources and our agricultural economy.<BR><BR><B>Tonight, we return once more for what promises to be a pivotal vote - will the Village of Homer sign onto a contract to provide treated water and sewer? Or will the Village Trustees decide instead to stand up for a healthy and vibrant future for Homer and the surrounding community?<BR><BR></B>Thanks to your efforts, we are closer than ever to realizing our goal. At the January 14th meeting, Village Trustees voted 3-3 in a straw poll on whether or not to proceed with contract negotiations, with the President casting a fourth vote in favor to break a tie. <B>We only need one more Trustee to vote "NO" to send Sunrise back to the drawing board.</B> <BR></SPAN><BR><SPAN>As we wrote in an open letter to the Village Board last month, local government has an important role to play in determining the future of our community. We can decide ourselves which direction to grow, and which industries to attract and entice. We can decide whether we want to become a mining town with a toxic coal slurry dump sitting outside our town forever. Now is the time to think about which kinds of industries and natural uses we want to save our water for.<BR><BR></SPAN>There is still time for the Homer Village Board to act to protect our farmland and local water resources by <B>voting "NO"</B> on any proposed water or sewer sales to Sunrise Coal. 

<P><B>Please plan to attend tonight's meeting at the <A title="Location: Homer Village Hall" href="https://maps.google.com/maps?q=homer+il+village+Hall&hl=en&ll=40.039559,-87.952187&spn=0.008378,0.018797&client=firefox-a&fb=1&gl=us&hq=village+Hall&hnear=0x880d2831838d5453:0x3ad35218f4a6ce23,Homer,+IL&cid=0,0,5964845707313141952&t=h&z=16&iwloc=A" target=_blank>Homer Village Hall</A> (500 East 2nd Street in Homer) and let the Village Board know you support protecting our water and farmland from this coal mine.</B> On Monday, February 11th, 20<SPAN>1</SPAN>3, the Village Board will meet at 7:00 pm to <SPAN></SPAN>to vote on a <A href="http://www.homervillage.com/documents/SunriseCoalWaterSupplyContractFinal.pdf" target=_blank>contract</A> to provide treated water and sewer services to Sunrise's proposed coal mine (<A href="http://www.homervillage.com/documents/feb2013.doc" target=_blank>see agenda</A>).</P>

Any deal now could open the door to future sales of hundreds of thousands of gallons per day of untreated water for washing coal - a sale that threatens to diminish water supplies and would send polluted mine water into the Salt Fork River. Homer trustees should send a strong message in support of productive farmland and clean water. ACT NOW: If you haven't already, please contact your Village Board members today and ask them to vote no on any water or sewer deal with Sunrise Coal.
