The figure is from an AP story carried in the News-Gazette today. The goofy 
analysis got a smile out of me at breakfast this morning. The relevant part is

"The wealthiest 10 percent of Americans – those making more than $138,000 
each year– earned 11.4 times the roughly $12,000 made by those living near 
or below the poverty line in 2008."

$138,000 is 11.5 times $12,000. They are comparing a typical person (or 
family, if Mort is right) in poverty with the lowest income of the upper 
10%. It's apples and oranges. The actual spread between the two groups is 
and must be many times the 11.4.
