Subject: [socialistdiscussion] China's role in world

I found this article on China by Niall Ferguson very interesting. It is presented from an entirely pro-capitalist point of view, but nevertheless it provides a learned overview of the economic history of China going back to the middle ages, and it gives a lot of data illustrating trends in the world economy today. It graphically illustrates the demise of US economic domination. It shows how China is challenging and relentlessly replacing the USA as the world's new economic power. It does not credit the role of state ownership and economic planning as a crucial factor in China's economic growth.

The eclipse of western economic and military domination of the planet is a crucial factor in the political instability of the west and the potentially revolutionary future.

In this regard I thought the words of Chinese premier Wen Jiabao were particularly significant:

" Do not work to pressure us on the renminbi rate.. Many of our exporting companies would have to close down, migrant workers would have to return to their villages. If China saw social and economic turbulence, then it would be a disaster for the world."

Thanks to Al for drawing this to my attention.
