Drone Wars: The Constitutional and Counterterrorism Implications of
Targeted Killing - Senate Subcommittee hearing


Oppty to send in written testimony, and also for LTEs and op-eds around
drone strikes. The “constitutional and statutory authority” issue referred
to below includes the 2001 post-9/11 AUMF continuing to be used as the
“justification” for drone strikes. Sen. Durbin recently expressed concern
that the AUMF is still being used nearly a dozen years later, so this could
be an opening for us to challenge that.****

*Description:  *U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), the Assistant Majority
Leader and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the
Constitution, Civil Rights, and Human Rights, will hold the first-ever
Senate hearing on the use of drones in targeted killings. The hearing will
address the legal and policy issues raised by drone strikes, including the
constitutional and statutory authority for targeted killings, the scope of
the battlefield in the conflict with Al Qaeda and associated forces, and
the international precedent set by U.S. drone policy. The hearing will also
explore proposals to increase transparency regarding U.S. drone policy and
establish a legal architecture to regulate drone strikes.****
