51-year-oldPalestinian-American Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh wascovering an Israeli military raid in the Jenin refugee camp thismorning when soldiers shot her in the face and killed her.Both her blue protective vest and her helmet were clearly marked“PRESS.” 

Demandthe U.S. State Department conduct a thorough investigation and theimmediate suspension of U.S. military aid.

In avideo showing the aftermath of Shireen being shot, a man can be heardyelling, “Injured! Shireen, Shireen, oh man, Shireen!Ambulance!” Al Jazeera journalist Shatha Hanaysha, alsowearing a helmet and vest marked as press, can be seen crouching downtrying to reach Shireen but being forced back by Israeli gunfire.The soldiers “did not stop firing even after shecollapsed,” Hanaysha said. “I couldn’t even extend my arm topull her because of the shots. The army was adamant onshooting to kill.”

Following their killing of Shireen,the Israeli military took to Twitter to announce that they wereinvestigating the possibility that Shireen had been killed “byPalestinian armed gunfire.” The Israeli Foreign Ministry offered toconduct a joint investigation with the Palestinian Authority andIsraeli military spokesperson Kochav Ran on Army radio accused her andher colleagues of being “ armed withcameras.”

“I encourage a thoroughinvestigation into the circumstances of her death and the injury of atleast one other journalist today in Jenin,” tweeted U.S. AmbassadorTom Nides. But, he didn’t specify that Israel must not be allowed toinvestigate and exonerate itself as has happened far too manytimes. 

Callon the U.S. State Department to require a full investigation — not byIsrael — into the grotesque and blatant murder of ShireenAbu Akleh. The U.S. must immediately suspend militaryaid to Israel pending the investigation.

Unfortunately, there's more. As thePalestinian people and advocacy community were mourning Shireen’sdeath, Israeli police descended upon Shireen’s family home where theyconfiscated the Palestinian flags flying outside. Elsewhere thismorning, Israeli bulldozers started to forcibly displace the MasaferYatta Palestinian villages in the South Hebron hills.  

The Biden administrationhas repeatedly said that it iscommitted to equal measures of freedom, security, dignity, and prosperity for Palestinians andIsraelis. But, in the words of author and activist Grace Paley, “theonly recognizable feature of hope is action.” JoinCODEPINK in calling for action. Demand justice forShireen.
