Paul Jay seemed relatively pro-Russiagate (or at least incurious about Russiagate) even as Aaron Mat? reported the facts about that evidenceless conspiracy theory and at some point debating Jay about the importance of Russiagate (which has been part of the reason we're taking on this regime change war against Russia via Ukraine). Message-ID: <33a7f44e-39eb-182a-0b6a-79f83ef6a241@forestfield.org> Chris Hedges' interview of Peter Oborne in https://therealnews.com/the-chris-hedges-report-ukraine-and-the-worthy-and-unworthy-victims-of-war (video at https://youtube.com/watch?v=UFdVgxZddso) talks about the "worthy" and "unworthy" victims as described in Hermann & Chomsky's famous book "Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media". As Hedges put it in his introduction: > This bifurcation of the world into worthy and unworthy victims, as Edward Herman > and Noam Chomsky point out in Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the > Mass Media, is a key component of propaganda, especially in war. The > Russian-speaking population in Ukraine, to Moscow, are worthy victims. Russia is > their savior. The millions of refugees and the millions of Ukrainian families > cowering in basements, car parks, and subway stations are unworthy Nazis. Worthy > victims allow citizens to see themselves as empathetic, compassionate, and just. > Worthy victims are an effective tool to demonize the aggressor. They are used to > obliterate nuance and ambiguity. > > Mention the provocations carried out by the Western Alliance with the expansion of > NATO beyond the borders of a unified Germany, a violation of promises made to > Moscow in 1990, the stationing of NATO troops and missile batteries in Eastern > Europe, the US involvement in the ouster in 2014 of Ukrainian president Viktor > Yanukovych, which led to the civil war in the East of Ukraine between > Russian-backed separatists and Ukraine?s army, a conflict that has claimed tens of > thousands of lives, and you are dismissed as a Putin apologist. It is to taint the > sainthood of the worthy victims, and by extension ourselves. We are good. They are > evil. And to his credit, Hedges brings up some things that don't get covered much in establishment media such as what he brings up in the second paragraph of the quote above. One could also point out that Ukraine signed the Minsk accords in bad faith as Petro Poroshenko told news outlets that "Our goal was to, first, stop the threat, or at least to delay the war ? to secure eight years to restore economic growth and create powerful armed forces." -- see https://www.rt.com/russia/557307-poroshenko-comments-minsk-agreement/ for more). One could also point to Boris Johnson's April 2022 visit to Ukraine urging Ukraine to break off peace talks with Russia (according to https://www.pravda.com.ua/rus/articles/2022/05/5/7344096/ cited by RT in English https://www.rt.com/russia/555038-ukraine-peace-talks-johnson/). But according to Oborne (in a view unchallenged by Hedges), we should see Putin's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine as being the equivalent of Tony Blair and G.W. Bush's invasion of Iraq -- each of these men are unconvicted war criminals. It seems to me that attempting peace accords between Ukraine and Russia is significant in light of an advancing threat from NATO countries toward the east, right up to the border of Russia. I'm unaware of a threat to the US from Iraq that is akin to the eastward push up to Russia's border by NATO. But, like in establishment media, this view gets no airing in the Hedges interview. Equivalency established, the Hedges interview then turns to what will justify prosecuting Putin as a war criminal but continuing to not prosecute Bush & Blair as war criminals: > Chris Hedges: I want to ask about what this means, when you bifurcate the > world into worthy and unworthy victims, what this does for those who want to hold > war criminals accountable. If worthy victims are deserving of justice and unworthy > victims are not, what are the consequences in terms of dealing with war crimes? > > Peter Oborne: Well, it?s a very difficult question, and something which is > very relevant. You and I both covered, in different ways, the British-American > invasion of Iraq. There is no question that that was, under international law, a > war of aggression. And therefore that makes the British prime minister Tony Blair > and the American president George W. Bush war criminals. I mean, actually, before > coming on the show, I was preparing for this conversation, and the Nuremberg > tribunal? This is quoting from the tribunal, the judge. ?To initiate a war of > aggression is not only an international crime. It is a supreme international > crime, differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the > accumulated evil of the whole.? > > Now, there is no question that Mr. Putin has done exactly that. He has initiated a > war of aggression in the Ukraine, and there are voices saying that he should be > held accountable, but on the other hand, there is no question either that Tony > Blair and George W. Bush initiated a war of aggression in Iraq. It wasn?t a war of > defense ? Which you can fight under international law ? It did not have United > Nations Security Council justification or agreement, and of course, it was based > on a fabrication of weapons of mass destruction. So if you are going to call for > Mr. Putin to be charged with the ultimate war crime, you must be consistent, and > you must call for Mr. Bush and Mr. Blair also to be called to account in exactly > the same way. > > Chris Hedges: What are the consequences for, in essence, a world that doesn?t > abide by the rule of law, that people who commit war crimes when they?re in power > in Washington or in the UK are not held accountable and Putin is? > > Peter Oborne: Well, do you know, you?re very privileged and I?m very > privileged. I?m a British citizen. You, I presume, are an American citizen. We > both belong to great countries which have, over time, built up democracy, rule of > law, parliament, a free press, all these things which we are taught about at > school, and I certainly believed it when I was taught about them at school. We > were taught at my school how amazing America was because it was the bastion of all > of this against evildoers, in particular at that time when I was a young boy, the > Soviet Empire. > > It breaks my heart, actually, that Britain and America no longer, or have chosen > no longer to, abide by those values. Actually, there?s a British phrase: fair > play. We prided ourselves, we were taught this very strongly. It was what we stood > for. Free speech, fair play, decency, rule of law, parliamentary democracy, > representative democracy. Now, if we?re going to say we stand for those things and > assert that on the international stage, we must be consistent about it. We can?t > say that whatever we do, when we commit a crime of aggression, that?s fine. That?s > something which is perfectly reasonable because [inaudible], and when somebody we > review as an enemy does it, that?s terrible. He needs to be held to account and > put on trial. > > That doesn?t have any credibility. And it explains, by the way, something which > has been heavily underreported in this conflict, is the amount of support which > Russia is getting across the globe, particularly in the Middle East. Because if > you?re in the Middle East, and you and I have both gone there a lot and talked to > a lot of people from there, they see us as aggressors. They see NATO as an > aggressive thing which has no respect for law and has destroyed countries. The treaty marked the first time the superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals, eliminate an entire category of nuclear weapons, and employ extensive on-site inspections for verification. For the last decade the US has undermined the right of Ukrainians in the east, those most aligned with Russia, to exercise self-determination. Instead of supporting implementation of the MINSK II Accord to promote peace, the US funneled billions of dollars worth of weapons to fuel a war in the east between those aligned with right-wing nationalist neo-Nazi forces and those aligned with Russia. The law also required TV and film distribution firms to ensure 90 percent of their content was in Ukrainian. > > A civil war in the Donbass resulted in 14,000 deaths prior to the Russian invasion, so the conflict did not start on Feb. 24th, but has been ongoing since 2014. > > As for the right of self-determination, the world has a right to choose life over death and the longer this war continues, the greater the risk to the entire world. > > (S) This is a war between autocracy and democracy, and we must defend democracy around the world. > > (R) While it?s true we have some semblance of democracy?some people can vote?in the United States, the fight to defend democracy must begin at home, where neo-fascists legislate to limit voting rights, storm the capitol, spread race hatred and back abortion bans to deny women control over their own bodies and send doctors who assist them to prison for life. Rather than hurling taxpayer money to defend a corrupt government in Ukraine, where neo-Nazis are an official wing of the military, we should focus our attention on defending democracy at home. Moreover, freedom of the press is under attack, not just in Russia and Ukraine, but here in the United States, where the Biden administration?following in Trump?s footsteps? insists on extraditing journalist Julian Assange for publishing US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Assange is extradited and prosecuted, this will have a chilling effect on all journalists in the United States. Without a free press, there is no democracy. > > > Marcy Winograd > Marcy Winograd of Progressive Democrats of America served as a 2020 DNC Delegate for Bernie Sanders and co-founded the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party. There are important details being left out which could well change how we see Russia in this conflict. Quoting "How to Respond to Common Misconceptions in the US About Ukraine" by Marcy Winograd (https://scheerpost.com/2022/09/08/how-to-respond-to-common-misconceptions-in-the-us-about-ukraine/) > Statement: Russia?s invasion of Ukraine was unjustified AND unprovoked. > > Response: Russia?s invasion of Ukraine is an unjustified war that violates the UN > Charter requiring UN member states to refrain from the ?use of force against the > territorial integrity or political independence of any state. The United States, > however, provoked the Russian invasion of Ukraine by supporting the expansion of > NATO, a hostile military alliance, backing a coup to overthrow a democratically > elected President, and sending arms to Ukraine since 2014. This made Ukraine, in > the eyes of Russia, an armed camp and existential threat. The response appears inconsistent and even a little self-contradictory to me. Russia's repeated attempts at peace (including the Minsk accord which gets no mention in this response and the ongoing US-backed shelling of the Donbas) are getting little to no credit. The US's Ukrainian bio labs (which Nuland admitted exist) get no coverage in establishment media but threaten people in and around Ukraine most directly (the rest of the world indirectly). The "unjustified" remark at the top of the response is itself not clearly justified. Complainers need to make it clear what a country should do when another country creates an existential threat and what to do when those measures fail to stop the threat. I'm reminded of Aaron Mat?'s repeated response about this conflict where he says that he thinks that Russia should have taken a different action than invading Ukraine but he never states (1) what Russia should have done instead, and (2) what Russia did prior to invading Ukraine that was wrong or in some way bad. There's also no accounting for how Russia has handled the Ukrainian territory and how that differs from Iraqi territory after the US/UK-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. > Statement: You can?t negotiate with Putin. Negotiations will never lead anywhere. There's no specific issue being raised with negotiating with Putin here. I suspect this is about something else that pro-war agitators can't bring up without being called anti-capitalist. This line reads to me as 'Putin is a madman' with no backing in facts. Rising energy costs hit people hard -- gas costs in the US have caused some of my friends and family to stay home, skyrocketing energy bills in European countries apparently result in bill-burning demonstrations (like what recently happened in Italy[1]). Americans aren't taking to the streets over this, but Europeans are. [1] https://odysee.com/@RT:fd/bills_burn_0509:1 or https://rumble.com/v1isn4x-italians-burn-energy-bills-in-protest-over-government-inaction-as-prices-so.html for RT's report, https://rumble.com/v1j5u1f-italians-burn-energy-bills-in-protest.html or https://youtube.com/watch?v=L1TXqeBKOCE for Jimmy Dore's report. Consider the recent proposal to Russia that they cap the price on their fuel while still being sanctioned. Liberals apparently don't like that Russia might behave in accordance with (1) market forces on energy (when a good becomes more scarce, it usually costs more to obtain) and (2) Russia's lack of obligation to supply fuel outside of a contract to supply fuel. According to Ursula von der Leyen, "We must cut Russia's revenues which Putin uses to finance this atrocious war against Ukraine"[1]. That means that not only are the US and EU committing economic suicide now but the US and EU also funding both sides of this regime change war against Russia via Ukraine. See https://odysee.com/@RT:fd/us-benefit-energy-crisis:5 or https://rumble.com/v1j7ruv-us-to-benefit-most-from-high-prices-in-europe-energy-tycoon.html [1] https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/08/business/liz-truss-energy-price-cap-europe/index.html As Rachel Marsden (RT commentator) has rightly pointed out, Russia has been secretly supplying fuel to the EU -- secretly in that EU leaders are virtue signaling over eliminating Russian fuel sources while taking in Russian fuel by the tanker. See https://rumble.com/v1j20qn-not-immoral-if-no-one-knows-eu-keeps-getting-russian-oil-via-hidden-routes.html and https://odysee.com/@RT:fd/shady-oil:b for more on this based on the Nikkei report that oil from Russia is reaching Europe by hidden routes. > (S) This is a war between autocracy and democracy, and we must defend democracy > around the world. > > (R) While it?s true we have some semblance of democracy?some people can vote?in > the United States, the fight to defend democracy must begin at home, where > neo-fascists legislate to limit voting rights, storm the capitol, spread race > hatred and back abortion bans to deny women control over their own bodies and send > doctors who assist them to prison for life. [...] So much of this is exaggeration ("storm[ing] the capitol"? A bunch of unarmed people were let into the Capitol by what appears to be a purposefully understaffed police contingent on Jan. 6 and it's still not clear that the Biden DOJ can defend allegations of insurrection as Jan. 6 protestors are widely labeled) and typical liberal bad organizing. Why not leave abortion out of this and work with those who don't see abortion the way you see it? What should matter is that you both agree on opposing war with Russia. It's not even clear that abortion policy change in the US is not democratic: One might view the change in national abortion policy as moving abortion policy from declaring abortion policy one way nationwide back to the states. Now it seems that the Russian fuel cap idea has fallen flat, so the new plan is to propose that everyone selling fuel accept a price cap. This would mean that NATO states can continue their war against Russia via Ukraine and the virtue signaling to go along with that without having to be so secretive about their self-imposed hypocrisy in accepting Russian fuel. https://rumble.com/v1jdy13-price-cap-for-all-suppliers-belgium-suggests-not-singling-out-russia.html https://lbry.bcow.xyz/@RT:fd/belgium-yt:4 From jbn at forestfield.org Sat Sep 10 23:17:36 2022 From: jbn at forestfield.org (J.B. The White Helmets get lots of laudatory, non-critical coverage in establishment-serving media including Democracy Now! where coverage of the alleged Syrian gas attack near Douma was one of the stories that caused Mat? to leave a 10-year tenure at DN (see https://youtube.com/watch?v=DjDb-Q0-Sdg from mid-March 2022 for more on DN!'s Syria coverage. That clip was described in the YouTube page just below the video as "On a recent episode of Democracy Now, host Amy Goodman opened the show with a video of a Ukrainian choir singing their demands for, according to Goodman, 'peace and a no-fly zone.' The two are mutually exclusive, of course, as a no-fly zone would bring NATO and Russia into direct conflict, so the possibility of peace AND a no-fly zone is a non-starter, as Goodman well knows."). As a reminder: If anyone else has anything to run, please feel free to get your video pointers to UPTV (UPTV at urbanaillinois.us). I have continued to ask UPTV to prioritize AWARE members video pointers over mine for AWARE on the Air, Carl Estabrook & David Green's video pointers over mine for News from Neptune, and David Johnson's video pointers over mine for Labor's World View TV.
