<DIV>In the 1980s, there were genuine conspiracies to convince the broad American public that satanic rituals were being conducted in day care centers, and that the Vietnamese were still holding POWs. These conspiracies were wildly successful, in that most people still probably believe the conspirators claims to be true. No ritual abuse ever happened, and no POW other than Robert Garwood (who chose to stay for a while) was ever held in Vietnam after 1973.</DIV>

<DIV>Now people apparently believe that SS is in trouble, when in its not, just like the believe that American POWs languish in Vietnam.</DIV>

<DIV>So the tea partiers and militias are recognized by Chomsky as having genuine grievances, which if not taken seriously could result in a genuine fascist movement. And the liberals are claiming that a conspiracy is already afoot, regardless of their grievances. But the (open) conspiracy is at the highest levels of society, and accusations of against the Tea Partiers nicely distracts us from the real threat. So whom do the Dems work for?</DIV>

<DIV>A nice local example is Education prof. Nicholas Burbules, who does a blog that "obsesses" about people like Michael Steele, the head of the Republican Committee. There's an article on the front page of the Local NG section today about some rather silly research. It all fits quite nicely, in my mind.</DIV>

<DIV>I just don't follow Durango's analogy. Democrats trying to use this incident to gain political capital for Obama (and his ugly policies) are hardly to be compared to Rosa Parks. It was Carl who brought up the relevance of the murder of Kiwane Carrington. Schweiggart and the Democrats deserve each other, just like the birthers and the truthers. The exploitation of this silly and basically irrrelevant comment has nothing to do with advocating for substantive change on a local or national level. We already know what Schwiggart is about--this incident doesn't tell us anything new.</DIV>

That larger issues need work does not mean local ones do not need action. This issue adds traction to the injustice ones.</DIV>

<DIV>I’m sure there were some major national and world issues that needed work at the same time that a tired Rosa Parks decided to sit where she was rather than move. “Why, I bet some of those white passengers were more tired than she was. I mean, like, like...what makes her better than them? Don’t they have rights too? I bet she wasn't really tired. She just wanted to make local trouble.” And she did have a plan: start local and personal and larger change could follow. In spite of dismissers, apologists, assassins, and "moles" planted among the change agents, positive change happened. And more is needed as our work is not yet complete. It requires the helpful support of the many.</DIV>
