The reality is that -- under our present system -- universities stay alive and thrive because of corporate donations, so getting lots of those is what administrators have to do. Does free speech support choosing a corporate commencement speaker?? Yeah, 'fraid so. Are the students' free speech rights protected when they protest?? Definitely. JP Morgan Chase has a close collaboration with the university and has pledged 30 million dollars to the school.</p>

<p class="style2">Under President Nancy Cantor, Syracuse University has been a relentless pursuer of revenue. She initiated a billion dollar fund-raising campaign which the university has assiduously promoted. Syracuse’s unremitting quest for dollars has often engendered both harsh criticism and ridicule, as in the 2006 commencement speaker selection. Singer-songwriter Billy Joel was chosen as commencement speaker after a $320,000 donation to SU’s Setnor School.</p>
