<P>It should be remembered that one of the most important Israeli cultural products of the early 1960s, Ephraim Kishon's "Sallah Shabbati" -- a deeply misguided and racist portrayal of bumbling Sephardi immigrants cast in the most offensive terms possible -- was produced in this racially charged climate. Its assertions of Sephardi barbarity and incompetence permeated all levels of Israeli society.</P></DIV></div><br>
