part of the Chinese "miracle".<BR><BR>Thousands of state run enterprises have
closed and been replaced by private enterprises.<BR><BR>Although there are
indeed well run state-owned enterprises, the general characteristic<BR>of
state-owned enterprises is that they are bureaucratic and poorly managed,
generally<BR>stupidly managed and are populated by generally inert and
ineffectual institutionalized workers.<BR><BR>Hence the article mentions

Ferguson very interesting. It is presented from an entirely
pro-capitalist point of view, but nevertheless it provides a learned
overview of the economic history of China going back to the middle ages, and
it gives a lot of data illustrating trends in the world economy today.
It graphically illustrates the demise of US economic domination. It shows
how China is challenging and relentlessly replacing the USA as the world's
new economic power. It does not credit the role of state ownership and
economic planning as a crucial factor in China's economic
growth.</FONT></DIV>
