Snappy, you say.</div><div>Exactly the message a peace movement might want to get across. Gitlin</div><div>disagrees. His preferred placard would be the most heavily footnoted</div><div>text since Lynn White Jr's history of the stirrup. Like Cooper, Gitlin</div><div>craves for respectability which means that he wants the placard to make</div><div>it clear that (a) Saddam bears responsibility for his country's plight,</div><div>(b), the bombings of Iraq since 1991 by the US (tactfully described by</div><div>Gitlin, echoing the DoD, as "no fly zone sorties") are okay. Todd Gitlin is professor of journalism and sociology and chair of the<br>
Ph.D. program in Communications at Columbia University. He holds<br>
degrees in three different subjects: mathematics (B.A., Harvard),<br>
political science (M.A., Michigan), and sociology (Ph.D., Berkeley).<br>
Along the way, he became a political activist in the New Left of the<br>
1960s, contributed to the so-called underground press, and began to<br>
write books. Gitlin's newest book is "Occupy Nation: The Roots, the<br>
Spirit, and the Promise of Occupy Wall Street" forthcoming as an<br>
e-book in April 2012.<br>
