<div dir="ltr"><br><div>Ah, well. I'm not a physicist, and I know nothing about Wasserman. I do know that while nuclear "accidents" may not be as common as thunderstorms, they are guaranteed to happen from time to time and are therefore "eminently predictable", just like gun deaths. Building a nuclear power plant in a crowded metropolitan area near the ocean or near an earthquake fault line is a recipe for disaster.</div>
<div><br></div><div>I'm also reasonably certain that, if we invested the kind of money in solar and wind and geothermal energy that we have invested, and continue to invest, in tar sands and fracking and "clean coal" and nuclear power plants, we COULD be 100% reliant on those energy sources within a relatively short time to supply all of our power needs, without a downside. We'll never know, though, unless we invest that money in an intelligent energy policy.</div>

Finally, I have little doubt that eventually nuclear reactors will be needed to supplant fossil fuels as energy sources, together with renewables, and therefore, there should be continued research and development of the new designs of reactors, already well developed, which in fact will eliminate the problems usually cited against nuclear waste, proliferation, etc.. At the present time, the economics of nuclear energy are, in the U.S., unfavorable. Eventually, that will change. China, India and other countries will continue to build them, because they need to, and to supplant coal as an energy source. Finally-"bis", nuclear power is good as a replacement of fossil fuels to hold back catastrophic climate change. If you all are worried about that you should not be so negative about nuclear power. </div>

People working at jobs that pay $7-8 an hour cannot support themselves or their families. There is no way to make that math work. And workers who cannot support themselves are in no position to spend money purchasing services and products from local businesses. The low wage economy means big profits for major corporations, hardship for working people, and hard times for local economies.</p>
