Convincing Iran’s leaders to abide by their nation’s commitments under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty has proven challenging.</div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'> </div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'>The agreement between Brazil, Turkey, and Iran not to develop nuclear weapons is not sufficient. It will take an international effort to apply economic pressure on Iran to prevent that country from developing nuclear weapons capabilities.</div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'> </div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'>The United States and our allies should work aggressively to use the political and economic tools at our disposal to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In 2010, Congress passed the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act, which extended U.S. economic sanctions placed on Iran under the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996 and prohibits companies and individuals from working with Iran’s petroleum sector. The bill contained many provisions of the Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act, which I cosponsored, and was signed into law by the President on July 1, 2010.</div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'> </div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'>Additionally, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2013 included a provision to impose unilateral sanctions against the Central Bank of Iran, blocking Iranian oil exports. President Obama also has issued a number of Executive Orders to take further steps in strengthening sanctions against Iran.</div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'><br></div><div class="ecxgwcrm_Normal" style='font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 11pt;'>Thank you again for contacting me.
