<div><big><big>It is not often that we can get a view of
exactly what measures US capitalism takes on a daily
basis to influence a foreign government. Recently,
however, a top former official in the State
Department under both Bush and Obama wrote an <a
moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/why-we-stuck-with-maliki--and-lost-iraq/2014/07/03/0dd6a8a4-f7ec-11e3-a606-946fd632f9f1_story.html?wpisrc=nl_hdtop">article</a>
in the Washington Post explaining exactly who met
with whom, when, etc. in Iraq. He explains, for
instance, how he met with Maliki daily and how Bush
had weekly video conferences with Maliki. He also
explains how the Iranian regime intervened at a
certain point and how a weakened US regime was
unable to counter them. But his explanation isn't
abstract; he cites exactly who went to Iran and when
and what was told to them. This is a blow-by-blow
account.</big></big></div>

<div><big><big>The author believes that the problem was
that the Obama administration should have been able
to foresee the sectarian disaster that Maliki was
creating and that there were other, viable options.
In the end, however, he disproves his own claim when
he refers to the rising sectarianism throughout the
region. Why should Iraq be any exception?</big></big></div>
