While protests elsewhere around the country have drawn massive crowds, and violence in some cases, Kade's lone vigil was a quiet one on Thursday along North Keller Drive, at the Avenue of Mid-America.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>It was bad enough, Kade said, that a St. Louis County grand jury declined to indict the Ferguson, Missouri, police officer who shot Michael Brown. But then, he said, a New York City grand jury declined earlier this week to indict the officers involved in the choking death of another black man, Eric Garner.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>"I am just outraged by the Eric Garner decision," Kade said. "It's time we stand up against injustice."<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Kade, a former Effingham Daily News reporter and editor who recently retired from his second career as a computer programmer, said the recent Brown and Garner deaths hit him on a personal level. Kade and wife Jo Ann have adopted 11 children over the years, several of whom are either black or bi-racial.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Kade said the Garner case was even more chilling than the Brown case because the attempted arrest was caught on video.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>"In the Michael Brown case, it was basically one person's word against another," he said. "But the Garner incident was all caught on video."<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>Kade said he believes the officers involved in the Garner death should have at least been indicted on manslaughter charges.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'><span style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>"I'm not saying the officers involved should have been charged with murder," he said.
