<p>This week, Illini Hillel sent a message to Jewish students on campus vilifying Students for Justice in Palestine's Israeli Apartheid Week at UIUC. Israeli Apartheid Week is a week of organized events raising awareness on campus about Israel's apartheid military and legal system which denies Palestinians basic human and civil rights.</p>

<p>As members of the Jewish community in Champaign-Urbana and supporters of freedom and equality, we were frustrated and dismayed to receive this email from Hillel staff:</p>

What does that mean? During the main part of the week there will be a large wall on the Quad that wrongfully accuses Israel of committing humanitarian crimes. Basically, some students will try to demonize the state of Israel and make students on campus uncertain about their relation to it. </span><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;font-size:12px;font-family:Arial;color:rgb(0,0,0);font-style:italic;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;background-color:transparent">As leaders of the Jewish and pro-Israel communities on campus, we strongly object to the harsh </span><span style="margin:0px;padding:0px;font-size:12px;font-family:Arial;color:rgb(0,0,0);font-style:italic;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap;background-color:transparent">and misleading rhetoric of Israel Apartheid Week. We think that promoting hate against one side is counter-productive to the goal of mutual assured peace and coexistence between the Israeli and Palestinian people. Our goal is to promote a positive message at Illinois that supports the peace process...</span></p>
<p>We believe Hillel should not claim to represent the whole Jewish community at the same time that it promotes disengagement from a critical conversation on Israel/Palestine, which Israeli Apartheid Week is trying to open up on campus. We want to show that there is a broad diversity of opinion about Israel/Palestine in the Champaign-Urbana Jewish community, and that many of us do support human rights and equality for all.</p>
