Arab Heritage Week Events -- Arab Student Association
Tuesday November 11 - Friday November 14, 2008 (there was an event on the
10th, sorry to get this out so late)
Virtual Tour of the Middle East
Tuesday, November 11, 7:00 pm
Location: Room 407, Illini Union
* Different aspects of several Arab countries will be presented in various forms:
video clips, oral presentation, pictures and much more. Come and learn about
life in Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Lebanon and Egypt.
Layalina Cultural Night
Wednesday, November 12, 7:00
Location: Illini Courtyard Café, Illini Union
* Come and enjoy a night of Arabic culture! There will be a live band playing
popular Arabic music (including a singer), henna, traditional Arabic dance
performances, calligraphy and much more, all for free!
Documentary Screening: "Control Room"
Thursday, November 13, 7:00 pm
Location: Room 269, Everitt Laboratory
* Jehane Noujaim's timely documentary explores the nature of truth and ethics
in the popular media, with particular focus on the primary satellite news
network to the Arab world, Al-Jazeera. Through interviews with journalists and
producers involved with Al-Jazeera's reporting on the war in Iraq, the film
provides a balanced look at how their news is gathered and presented in
comparison to the Western world's news outlets.
* There will be an open discussion following the screening. Professor Althaus
from the Department of Communication will be there to answer questions and
lead the discussion. Professor Althaus received his Ph.D. from Northwestern
University. His areas of expertise include political communication, public
opinion and the political impact of “new media” and Internet technologies.
Short Movies from the Arab World:
Friday, November 14, 7:00 pm
Location: Room 407, Illini Union
Several short movies will be shown originating from different Arab countries and
addressing different issues, including:
“Driving an Arab Street”: The film follows Egyptian taxi drivers as they navigate
the streets of Cairo and share their diverse perspectives on American and
Egyptian society, culture, politics and the relationship between these two
civilizations.
“Forces of Change: Artists of the Arab World” Filmed on location in over ten
countries, this documentary introduces the viewer to the contemporary art
movements of the Arab world through interviews with twenty artists who
discuss their work.
“Lebanon through Dabke”: a sequence of songs with video clips showing
different aspects of Lebanese culture and depicting the folkloric Lebanese dance
“dabke”. It will also include the newest dabke song and performance.
