Thanks, Carl for sending Pepe's relevant column of 4-1/2 years ago "Trump Is Right: NATO Is Obsolete" (russiainsider.com) especially in light of the Administration's and Congressional overwhelming knee-jerk welcome of Zelinski yesterday.  You may have sent it in response to my comments which I sent to peace-discuss yesterday that "Ole Trump was right" that US overpays NATO.
Pepe remarks that Trump regard[ed] NATO as a "protection racket" run by Washington's deep state and Polish and Baltic hysteria against Russian aggression, and that Europe should pay its own way.  Pepe goes on to say "after many a closed-door meeting with Kissinger [do you suppose Kissinger influenced Trump's NATO opinion?], Trump may have understood the U.S. suicidal strategy of simultaneously antagonizing Russia and China,... but Trump's ideal outcome was to get more European weapons deals for the U.S. military-industrial-intelligence complex." 
And I might add before and since the sabotage of Russia's Stream 2 pipeline in early 2022, U.S. is eager for Oil Company  contracts with Europe for LNG exports.

P.S. The new billion dollar amounts to Ukraine I reported in my comments yesterday came from recent AP reports; amounts pledged after Zelensky's Congressional speech last night have already escalated..
