[Rfu-station] Re: [RFU] station log format/save the trees

Nick,
Some thoughts here.

Regardless of there being no specification for standard 8 1/2" x 11"
paper, it is the easiest paper to print. Any other size requires
printing two-up and cutting.

There is a requirement that logs be kept in
"an orderly and legible manner, in suitable form and in such detail that
the data required for the particular class of station concerned are readily
available. Key letters or abbreviations may be used if the proper
meaning or
explanation is contained elsewhere in the log. Each sheet must be
numbered and dated.
Time entries must be made in local time and must be indicated as
advanced (e.g., EDT) or non-advanced (e.g., EST) time."

While we could use very small, narrow lines (now I'm just kidding you about
your font size, but also a little to make my point :)...

We really could write very small, but this poses a problem for some people,
plus it could result in a log that wasn't "legible."

Another issue is that we have to have a log that covers each hour of the
day.
So essentially, any log has to have the theoretical capacity to indicate
24 different hours.
Thus, it's very hard to do 24 lines and make them large enough to stay
legible.

I don't have the file on this computer, so the current version of the
log may actually
be short of the number of lines theoretically needed. Since we have
automated programming
and don't have any days that do have enough shows to require a full 24
log lines, we're OK I believe.

We don't have to number the log pages and a few other exceptions, since
we're a LPFM. But we do have to have all the info that is on the current
log. The log sheet must also have enough of a margin at the top so that
the clipboard clip will not cover any of the lines where info has to be
written. I think it's going to be difficult to do that in a half-size
sheet. A sheet that is bigger than half size, but smaller than a full
sheet will actually result in waste, too, if the leftover part gets
recycled.

Recycling brings up another point. While we have to retain the logs for
2 years, they can then be recycled. And we can buy recycled paper to
print them on. However, when we need more logs, we typically print on
whatever we have on hand, so making this a requirement, instead of a
suggestion would be a problem.

If you want to try to mock-up a half-size log sheet, with at least 15
lines, plus date space above that and a header indicating it's a WRFU
Log Sheet above the date line, then please do so and submit it for
review at Sunday's Membership group meeting and we'll consider whether
it's acceptable.

One thing I know won't work is to have a continuous sheet or roll of
paper. We have enough trouble getting people to properly date the log
sheet by getting a new sheet on top for the first show of the day. I
believe that a continuous sheet would make this problem even worse,
because too many people would not realize they need a new sheet. We
HAVE to have a system that is acceptable to the FCC and easy for
volunteers to use. A continuous sheet would not meet either of those
requirements.
