Go to this page to see links to relevent bits about the lsits: http://trees.cu.groogroo.com/ Or else just go straight to here to see the list of all groogroo lists. http://lists.groogroo.com Pauline, you are the administrator and you are a member of all the lists. If you go to: http://lists.groogroo.com/cgi-bin/admin and then click on the list names and enter the password I emailed you earlier you can add new members to the lists and change various parameters of list operation. Everthing is well documented. Ask me if you have questions. I apologize to sending this message to all the lists but I am just trying to seed the archives for each list. trees.cu.groogroo.com can be your main webpage if you don't already have one. Let me know who from your group wants to maintain the web page and I will set them up with appropriate access. If you already have a webpage I suggest that you go ahead and copy the links I put on trees.cu.groogroo.com to your page. Let me know if you need anything. -- Zachary C. Message-ID: Fellow Tree advocates! The Membership and Outreach committee needs help getting signatures on our affidavit! IP Customers need 5,000 by April 10th! We are submitting these affidavits as testimony to the Illinois Commerce Commission to demonstrate the vast public disappoval of Illinois Power's tree cutting plan. The affidavit simply states that those who sign are suporters of the Illinois Power Customers United to Save our Trees, and think that the ICC should reject the IP plan. You can help us get signatures in the following ways: Pick up some affadavits at the office of the Illinois Student Environmental Network at 110 South Race st. ( intersecting Main street), Urbana, or download it from the save our trees website www.saveiltrees.org. Collect signatures from people at work, friends or neighbors. The membership and outreach committee is going door to door getting signatures. Going door to door in our neighborhoods is the fastest way that we can get signatures, and even an hour of canvassing can get a considerable amount of signatures. We are still trying to fundraise for the $15,000 in legal costs for the campaign. We are also selling Save Our Trees buttons for a dollar, handing out literature, and distributing ribbons for a suggested donation of $25. If you would like any of this material to go canvassing with, stop by the ISEN office (address given above). We are also seeking volunteers to set up a table at supermarkets to collect signatures and fundraise. If you have a couple of hours of free time to volunteer, it would be greatly appreciated. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Hi folks. I posted the first question and have received some replies but not a lot of specific information. (1) I did not get to speak directly with my Urbana caller who left me a message about pruning in his area, and I don't know exactly where his house is. I may see him tomorrow and can ask. I referred him though to the Urbana City Arborist if he's in city limits. (2) Someone replied to me about reports of tree cutting in Orchard Downs. The details were not clear or resolved from what I could discern. Presumably not IP related. (3) I have seen University O&M actively pruning on campus property these days. Nothing particularly alarming that I happened to notice, except a few head-scratchers. Presumably not IP related. (4) If you see suspicious trimming activity approaching your area, TAKE PICTURES. In all cases of environmental and property damage, documentation IS CRITICAL. Take pictures before, and after, and during if you're game. If you take pictures before and nothing happens after all, you're only out a few bucks and maybe the campaign could use them anyway. (5) As a general reminder, please be judicious when replying to a message on the Trees email list: - If your reply message is safe to be public, then reply to the Trees list and not to the individual sender. "Reply to All" will do this although it is preferable to send only to the list. - If your reply message is definitely not ready to be public, then Reply only to the sender. (Do not Reply to all or to the list.) - Please delete unnecessary content from the original message. Finally, please continue this thread on the list; I am not personally involved in coordinating any of this activity. I posted to encourage the public forum. Thanks, Bill Saylor PS Great job by so many of you who participated in the ICC public meeting in Champaign the other week! Message-ID: <03A387B8F692D41186D700A0C98E0C5F038D9F@dastrom.pwnet> I would be glad to look at or look into questionable pruning especially if it seems to be vandalism or unlawful pruning but I need an address and more specific information. Citizens should report suspicious unlawful activity to the appropriate City department as soon as they see it. If this is in reference to utility pruning I am aware of IP pruning in the areas west of Philo south of Colorado (IP crew one) and west of Race north and south of University (IP crew two). If there are concerns about IP's tree trimming work let me know. Please be specific and provide addresses and as much detail information on your concerns as you can. This will make my efforts more efficient and allow me to broaden my attention. I regularly get numerous requests to look at the same thing so I will not attempt to return responses to everyone but I will attempt to look at and address all concerns. -----Original Message----- From: ISEN/Laura Huth [mailto:isen@prairienet.org] Sent: Friday, March 23, 2001 4:52 PM To: mjbrunk@city.urbana.il.us Subject: Fwd: Pruning afoot? >Delivered-To: isen@prairienet.org >Delivered-To: lhuth@prairienet.org >Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 14:37:45 -0600 (CST) >From: William Saylor >To: trees@lists.groogroo.com >cc: lhuth@prairienet.org >Subject: Pruning afoot? >Status: > > >I got a message from a friend in E/SE Urbana last night who spotted some >possibly suspicious ROW trimming in his area. We need to get as many Letters to the Editor and other articles letting people know that we need to keep up the momentum and a more than watchful eye on IP's next moves. We need to make sure that the new tariff that IP drafts is in the interest of the citizens, and most importantly , we need to make sure that IP knows that we are still active! WE NEED FUNDRAISERS! Our fundrasing committee is greatly understaffed. If you can step up to a chair position, or just want to help out selling buttons and ribbons, please reply back to me, call 384-0830 or come to tomorrow's general meeting. WE NEED SIGNATURES ON OUR AFFADAVITS! Even though the hearings are postponed for now, we still need signatures to show support for the IP Customers United to Save our Trees. Thanks to all those who contacted me about setting up tables at supermarkets. We are still waiting for permission to do so! If you would like to get signatures at your office or in your neighborhood, you can print an affadavit out from our website (www.saveiltrees.org) or, you can come to tommorrow's meeting and get a hard copy. You do not necessarily need to be in IP service =district in order to sign a petition. Just have the non-customer put an asterick next to their name. For those who already have signatures or donations and need to know where to send them to: Save Our Trees 110 South Race Street Suite 205 Urbana, IL 61801 Thank You all and see you tomorrow! I am in the habit of running on a trail through those woods, and I was dismayed to see them being clear-cut. I made some phone calls to O&M and the University Arboretum, and I was told by Mr. Gary Beale and Mr. Dave Williams that the idea of clear-cutting was initiated by Mr. Dave Langendorf of the University Police Department. Mr. Langendorf was concerned because people had been participating in illicit activities in those woods, and homeless people had set up shelters there. Mr. Langendorf relayed his concerns to Mr. Craig Bazzani of the University President's office, and they decided that the best way to take care of the situation was to clear-cut the woods. Mr. Bazzani granted O&M funding to conduct the clear-cutting. People from the Arboretum, to whom the land is technically assigned, did go through the woods and mark "thirty to fifty" trees that were not "trash trees," and would not be cut down. Some day in the future, the land is to be used by the arboretum for plant experiments. It's hard for me to say whether this policy decision of clear-cutting the woods was a bad one or a good one. It's not clear to me when the Arboretum will begin conducting its experiments, and I'm not sure how to distinguish "trash trees" from "good trees," or what their relative values are to the general University environment. I suspect that it may be an over-reaction to crime to clear-cut wooded areas in order to prevent illicit activity. I know that these kinds of policy decisions, which affect everyone on campus, should not be made by the University Police, and should not be made in virtual secret to avoid public debate.
