lecture/demonstration introducing the handcrafted, sculptural instruments he uses in music reflecting traditions of the world, along with masks and costumes fit for rituals, and sounding objects such as sonic tops.</span></p>

Ewart and Stephen Goldstein</span></b><span> <i>at the Krannert Art Museum</i></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span>This Minneapolis-based duo features AACM associated multi-instrumentalist Douglas R. Ewart, whose handcrafted instruments—often made of found materials—reflect world traditions in sound and stand alone as works of art. Ewart is joined by symbiotic improviser/composer Stephen Goldstein, who provides foundations of rhythm and sonic textures through his use of laptop electronics.</span><span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span>Douglas R.
Ewart</span></b><span> is best known as a composer, improviser, sculptor and maker of masks and instruments. Ewart is also an educator, lecturer, arts organization consultant, and all around visionary. Born in Kingston, Jamaica and currently based in Minneapolis, Ewart has performed throughout the world, including collaborations with Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Henry Threadgill and others. Ewart’s abilities extend to a variety of instruments including saxophone, clarinet, flute, bamboo flutes, bassoon, didgeridoo, Rastafarian hand drums, and numerous hand-made and invented instruments. His sculptures, sound sculptures, and handcrafted masks have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Ewart has received numerous awards, including a Bush Artists Fellowship, a Minnesota Composers Forum/McKnight Foundation Fellowship, Jerome Foundation grants, and Mayor Harold Washington's Outstanding Artist
Award. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span>Stephen Goldstein</span></b><span> is an interactive laptop improvisator/electronic drummer/percussionist/sound designer who has worked for over 30 years in a myriad of musical styles and genres specializes in reinterpreting Karnatic rhythmic theory in his performances, which range from solos to full ensembles. He currently works with the group AntiGravity; pianist/composer Carei Thomas; and former University of Illinois Urbana Champaign student David Means amongst others.</span></p>
