Hi Community Justice!

1) PLEASE turn in your background checks if you ever want to
participate in mediation or supervision. There will be a
supervision project April 22 so you should get those in right
away! They can be turned in to the envelope marked VIP forms
on the door. (RSO complex, 2nd floor of the Union)

2)BOOKS TO PRISONERS if you are still interested in going to
the first monthly trip to Books to Prisoners, please contact
Christina Chou, Books to Prisoners Coordinator right away at
cchou3 at uiuc.edu. They will leave around 2:45 from the Circle
Drive and return around 5:00.

3) Below is a letter I recieved regarding a scholarship for
volunteers with financial need.

Dear VIP People --

The Fred S. Bailey Scholarship Program, which I direct (part
time), is intended for UIUC undergraduates who demonstrate
concern for other people and willingness to work at making the
world a better place.

Our awards range from $1,000 to $3,000 per year and are
available for four years.

In recent years, I am happy to report, almost all applicants
who met our criteria (which can be reviewed in a minute or two
at our website) and who sent us complete applications were
successful in obtaining Bailey assistance.

Active VIP volunteers are almost certain to meet our central
criterion,by virtue of their participation in your various
programs.

Applicants must also have financial need; we are looking for
people who without our assistance would be at risk of
graduating with loan burdens high enough to limit their
postgraduate options.

Applications require an autobiographical statement, some
references, and family financial information. They are read
with care by members of the Bailey Committee.

It takes time to apply, but we think anyone truly needy will
find that time very well rewarded.

Bailey alumni report that this "old fashioned" scholarship
meant a great deal to them because they knew that Bailey
Scholarships were awarded not according to some computerized
formula but by real people who read what they had done (and
intended to do) with their lives.

The Bailey website with full information and a downloadable
application is:
