*VIP Community Justice: *
Pen Pals needed!
Are you interested in an interesting and fun service project that you can
do from the comfort of your dorm or apartment? Then the pen pal program is
for you! Interested students will be paired with an inmate incarcerated
somewhere in Illinois. We ask that pen pals write at least one letter a
month (stamps and envelopes ARE PROVIDED). It is COMPLETELY SAFE. As a pen
pal, you use a pseudonym and a fixed return address. This is a great
opportunity and is truly life changing. For more information, email Kailey
@ vip.community.justice at gmail.com.

*VIP Hunger and Homelessness:*
*Eastern Illinois Foodbank Repack -- Thursday, November 10th from 5:30 -
7:30 pm*
We will be repackaging food for local food pantries again. There are
limited spots available and they go quickly, so if you are interested in
attending, please contact me ASAP!
**Transportation will be provided by me. However, *if you have a car and
are able to carpool* (it's not far), please let me know. That would be a
huge help!

*VIP Social Empowerment:
Volunteer with Hospice
*VIP Empowerment is starting a program with Hospice patients in CU. When a
patient is given 6 or less months to live, they are put in Hospice
care--and you can volunteer to make a real difference in their life! Below
are the opportunities being set up; for more info, contact Marie at <
vip.social.empowerment at gmail.com>.

1. *Pair-up:* You can be paired up with a terminally ill patient. This
requires going to one of the local nursing homes one hour a week. If you
are on vacation one week or out of town, send them a post card or call them
to keep in touch. On your weekly visit you can do whatever you want with
your patient. A few examples given last night from current volunteers is
watching sporting events together, or doing some form of art at each
visit. During your orientation the volunteer coordinator will make sure
she pairs you will someone who has a common interest. You may also do this
event with a friend if you are worried about making a connection with the
patient--the more the merrier! This is a great opportunity to build
friendships with people in their last few months of life. You can make a
difference!!

2. The next opportunity is called "*Dream*". This is similar to make a
wish foundation, but you are granting wishes for those who are terminally
ill. Your role in this opportunity may vary. You may make calls to sports
teams, celebrities, or other agencies to ask if they are willing to grant
one of our patient's dreams (The contacts are available to you, so you
don't have to search for phone numbers!). One man got to Skype Stephen
Tyler from his bed and died a short few hours later. These dreams really
bring light to these patients. They are appreciative that you are taking
the time out of your day to care about them. You can make a difference and
also obtain professional skills.

3. *In-home volunteering*: This opportunity allows you to go into people's
homes and hang out with patients while their caregivers go out to get
groceries, go shopping, or just need a break.

4. You may also have the opportunity to *host an event or support
group*for people who have lost a loved one. You may make cards for
the family or
host a get-together to honor a loved one.

*Community Events:

**C-U Park District:*
All About A Cappella
I need 5-10 volunteers on November 11 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. Basically,
volunteers will be monitoring the merchandise area and helping the
different a cappella groups get on stage. The event will be at the
Virginia Theatre. Volunteers need to wear black pants and white shirt.
If you are interested, please contact Jimmy Gleason at
jimmy.gleason at cparkdistrict.com or 217-398-2550.

*University YMCA:*
Event *10am-2pm on November 12th *at Lincoln Square.

We are co-sponsoring an event to connect immigrants and working families in
the community with resources in Champaign County like affordable health and
dental care, child care resources, immigrant and worker rights, and legal
help.

We are looking for volunteers for a few different roles:

1. Translation services – we need bilingual Spanish/English speakers to
help social service agencies translate on-site. You would sit at a table
with a community agency and help out with translation throughout the event.

2. Children’s activities – this will be a family event so we’ll have
separate activities for children. This includes roles like face painting,
running games, coloring, and signing children in and out of the children’s
area.

3. Event logistics – we need help with greeting people as they arrive and
giving them a layout of the event, distributing refreshments, and directing
folks around the event.
