HI All,
I sent an e-mail to 3Rs group leaders in BN and Carbondale, and asked if
they would do a write up of what their group was up to, so I could post some
recent news on the Website.
This is from Ryan in Bloomington Normal. I'd like to post it to our
website... any objections?

Ryan Latvaitis is a coordinator of 3Rs in Bloomington-Normal, a loose
affiliation of like-minded people who all recognize that the availability of
books in prison libraries helps prisoners make the most of their
incarceration.  If there are books prisoners can spend their time learning
about a trade, reading philosophy, improving their vocabulary, learning
another language; books allow prisoners' minds to transcend the walls around
them and soar into the pages of a novel - another world.  The catharsis
offered by a protagonist's redemption; the anger that is released when a
villain gets his just desserts; a book can offer a prisoner an emotional
experience that leaves him or her with a deeper soul, or an academic
experience that broadens their abilities.  The choice is that of the
prisoner to read or not to read, and what type of book to pick up.  But
surely a prisoner cannot make the decision to improve themselves unless we
as their fellow human beings provide them with the supreme tool of
self-improvement:  the book.
