To all you shivering and sliding bicycle commuters,

Once again - your local Bike Project has been elevated to CU Superstardom.
Check out this segment that was aired on Jan 25th on Channel 3 -
http://illinoishomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=65911.

Aside from the occasional brushes with fame, The Bike Project has been busy
through the winter. Here's a quick run down of things that are going on,
and ways you can get involved.

1) *The Bike Project sold a used bike to the University of Illinois.* The
folks at Krannert purchased a 1-speed cruiser bike for folks in their
department to share as a way to get between buildings on campus. There are
several more bikes that are waiting for a similar assignment with Facilities
and Services. This is good stuff!!

2) The Bike Project is also in the process of writing a proposal in pursuit
of a University of Illinois Sustainability Grant to put a part-time staffed
auxiliary of The Bike Project on campus. We'll be submitting the proposal
in April. Wish us luck and feel free to tell anyone you know in the Office
of Sustainability that this sounds like a great idea.

3) Winter is a great time for getting improvement project completed at The
Bike Project space. A list of possible long term projects is out on the
Wiki. This allows folks to sign up for a project they find interesting and
helps us track what's getting worked. *Check it out* -
http://thebikeproject.wikispaces.com/tasks-to-do. If you want to take
something on, by yourself or with friends, you can start with an item on
this list.

4) *For those that have build-a-bikes and personal bikes in the co-op space
- j*ust a reminder that expired build-a-bikes can be returned to the wild
(others are free to claim them) after their tags expire. Personal bikes
should only be kept in the co-op during the duration of their repair, and
also need to have a current tag. We are trying to make space to pick up the
rest of the University donation sometime in early March.

Aside from those tid-bits, there have been improvements in the number of
shop quality workstands and tools available at the coop.

*The Bike Project Tool Tip* - Don't use a chain tool to remove extremely
rusted chains. Use the large bolt cutters. If you are not sure how to
correctly use a chain tool, ask a volunteer staffer (a good rule of thumb
for any tool). This comes up because each month 2-3 new chain tools have to
be ordered to replace broken ones.

See you around. Enjoy the snow. We saw a homemade pair of studded tires in
the shop this past Sunday - very cool!
