Wow! <http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/%7Eslinder/jail_library/><http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/%7Eslinder/jail_library/>
What a day we had yesterday! All the books have been loaded into the
downtown jail and we are hoping to begin offering library services next
Friday, September 23rd. The library will be staffed every Friday from 1-4 PM
and alternating Mondays from 6-9 PM. Thank you to everyone who was at the
meeting today and helped load in books! If you weren't able to make the
meeting today but still would like to volunteer there is plenty for you to
do. For each time the library is staffed we would like one lead
volunteerand two supporting
volunteers.

Volunteer responsibilities: <http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/%7Eslinder/jail_library/>
The primary responsibility of all volunteers will be to interact with
inmates as they come in by cell block to choose books. No library experience
is necessary to volunteer at the jail library.

Lead volunteers will commit to being in the library for the full three hours
that the library is open and will be responsible for communicating with
other lead librarians about how to catalogue, organize and circulate books.
It isn't necessary to be a professional librarian to serve as a lead
volunteer, we have several librarians and library school students who have
experience with these tasks and will be able to provide guidance.

Supporting volunteers will commit to being in the library for a 1 1/2 to 2
hour shift (allowing time for overlap with the other supporting volunteer)
and will do whatever tasks the lead volunteer deems necessary.

Time commitment: We are asking all volunteers for a once a month commitment.
If you would like to volunteer more than once a month, we will be happy to
schedule you more often. When you reply to this email with your availability
(see below), please indicate how often you would like to volunteer.

Volunteer approval: In order to volunteer at the jail you need to be at
least 21 years of age without any felony convictions. If you have not
already been approved as a jail volunteer, please contact Jay at
jay.schubert at gmail.com in order to arrange a time to be approved.

Lending Policy: <http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/%7Eslinder/jail_library/>
Our lending policy and organizational system are still largely undetermined
and it is our hope that the lead volunteers can work together to communicate
about the most efficient and effective way to circulate books and add to our
collection. Jay and Nancy are pursuing the possibility of putting a computer
(not connected to the internet) in the library to use for tracking, but in
the mean time we will need to use paper and pen to keep track of books as
they are checked out. The current jail library policy is that inmates may
check out six books and when they return those books, they may check out six
more. For the time being, that seems like the easiest way to manage the
collection.

Availability: <http://www.uni.uiuc.edu/%7Eslinder/jail_library/>
Ready to volunteer? We need people as soon as next Friday and it would be
nice to be able to put out a volunteer schedule for the fall and early
winter by early next week. Please respond to Suzanne (
suzanne.linder at gmail.com) with the times when you are available. Please
indicate which days you are available to volunteer and if you would like to
be a lead volunteer or a supporting volunteer. Although you may indicate
more than one time a month that you are available, we will not schedule you
more than once a month unless you ask to be scheduled more often. If you are
available multiple days, and have a preference as to which days among those
you would like to be scheduled, please rank your availability each month.

Here are the days we will be staffing the library. Please respond to this
message and place an X by the dates you are available. Please indicate also
if you would like to be a lead volunteer or a supporting volunteer and how
many times a month you would like to volunteer.
