I just saw a half hour segment of Democracy Now TV on the subject of the missing prisoners. Tonight at 11PM when it is repeated on satellite, I will record this segment and then transfer it to VHS tape ("she said, sounding boldly competent"). It includes phone interviews with a couple of the prisoners who have since been released on "habeas corpus" because awaiting trial - some were even in on municipal code violations like "reading tarot cards without a license." Human Rights Watch is investigating and a person representing them is on too. It is even more appalling in the details. This needs somehow to get into more mainstream media. Barbara Kessel

  from Democracy Now:

Prisoners "Left to Die" in Cells During Hurricane Katrina
Human Rights Watch has also revealed that hundreds of prisoners were abandoned in New Orleans Parish Prison during Hurricane Katrina. Flood water rose to chest-high levels in the cells. Prisoners were given no food for days. Some inmates from the section of the prison known as Templeman III said they saw bodies floating in the floodwaters as they were evacuated from the prison on September 1 - four days after the storm hit. It remains to be seen how many prisoners may have died. According to Human Rights Watch, over 500 prisoners are missing from the list of people evacuated from the jail.
