GREETINGS!
Welcome to Common Ground Food Co-op's weekly (for now) e-newsletter! You're
getting this missive because you're a member of Common Ground who's also
signed up to be on the CGFC mailing list. If you aren't interested in
receiving these updates, please email commongroundfoodcoop at gmail.com. A
paper version is posted on the bulletin board in the store.
Every week, via this transmission, members will be provided with store
updates/news, links to relevant news items/political actions, and other bits
and pieces worthy of mention. If you have anything of a similar bent you
think members should know about, please email links to
commongroundfoodcoop at gmail.com. Thanks!
STORE NEWS:
****We're still looking for tabling volunteers for the Farmers' Market -
working all morning isn't required. If you have some time on the morning of
8/27 and/or the mornings of 9/3, 9/10, 9/17, and 9/24, please contact Lisa
B-K at commongroundfoodcoop at gmail.com OR call the store at 352-3347 and
leave a message.
****Here's another volunteer opportunity: we are tentatively scheduled to
have a table at Champaign-Urbana Day in Douglass Park on Saturday, August
13. The event goes from 11-6; we will need volunteers at setup and in shifts
until breakdown when the event is over. If you're interested in getting core
worker or worker hours at this event, please contact Lisa B-K using the info
above.
****The new website is now 3/4 the way designed! Hopefully next week we'll
have a link to a nearly-finished (or finished!) version for everyone to see.
Here's a hint: it's very green.
**** We've tossed around the idea of starting a book club this fall for
co-op members. We know, another thing to add to your already-crammed
schedules, but wouldn't it be cool to read a book over the course of a month
and then get together with other members somewhere to discuss it? The
possibilities are endless! There are so many books about food and food
politics and cooking and cooperative efforts (among other topics) out there
it's hard to know where to begin, so email your suggestions to
commongroundfoodcoop at gmail.com and we'll see what we can get started.
****Pine nuts remain on sale to add to your summery pesto fun! Get 'em while
they're $6.80/pound!! Also, dried mango is back in stock, and it's on sale
at $7.65/pound!
****Also, remember to take advantage of the CGFC Product blog - it's a place
you can go to get some news about items CGFC carries as well as make
suggestions to our product buyer, Molly. Find it here:
www.cgfcproducts.blogspot.com <http://www.cgfcproducts.blogspot.com>
****Another reminder - this summer's drought has been rough on CGFC
suppliers/CSA farmers Jim and Diann Moore. There's a fundraiser going on to
help these folks buy hay to feed their livestock this winter - if rain
continues to be scarce, they won't have hay. More information can be found
here:
http://www.prairielandcsa.org/drought.htm
****The next worker orientation is this Saturday, 6 August, 1 PM at the
store.
GOT A FEW MINUTES?
Here are some links on the world wide web coordinators have pulled together
that the membership might find informative, thought-provoking, or, well,
kinda funny:
****Brandy, our produce coordinator, sends this link about a celebrity-laden
campaign to raise awareness of "the unfair nature of agricultural
subsidies". Check it out:
http://tinyurl.com/dvk9p
****Very cool campaign targeting schoolchildren and the corner stores that
feed them:
http://www.thefoodtrust.org/php/programs/corner.store.campaign.php
****Study shows that organic farming yields for corn and soybeans are the
same as conventional farming, only organic farming is pesticide-free and
uses less energy:
http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/norm071805.cfm
****Another small company gets bought out by a giant corporation - this time
it's Hershey buying Scharffen Berger. Sigh:

**** Lisa B-K's favorite food blog of the week also throws in a dash of
left-leaning politics along with the great photos and scrumptious prose:
http://www.madeater.blogspot.com
Please feel free to forward these links to people you think might benefit
from such knowledge!
Thanks and look for #3 same time next week!
