We can use iw dev wlan0 scan to get the same result. The advantage is that iw is always installed, and doesn't block in the same way that the old wext API that wireless-tools uses does. Disadvantage is that it only works with mac80211 drivers, but those are the only ones we're supporting so far anyway.
