NetworkManger isn't a GNOME-only applet anymore - the daemon is, well,
just a daemon, and the applet seems to use only the freedesktop.org
system tray standards. It works pretty well with LXDE and OpenBox
with freedesktop.org-compliant desktop panels.

That said, the API for interacting with the NetworkManger daemon is
enough to make your skin crawl.. a few of us tried earlier this year
to do something similar and threw in the towel after a few frustrating
hours.
