Broadcom chips don't run on magick smoke, they run on fail.

We ran into the same problem and worked out a partial solution:

In summary, there was an option that had to be turned on in the Linux
kernel, which then had to be recompiled.  Even then, not all Broadcom
chips work (just more than none of them).
