FYI, possible captive portal solution for iOS devices. I'll try to make
something similar with commotion-splash after the wireless summit.

I can confirm that the Lighttpd configuration posted here
<http://forum.daviddarts.com/read.php?9,8879,8910#msg-8910> works.

That configuration appears in a forum for PirateBox, which is another
offline wireless server mostly used for public file sharing.

Previously I was using Pancake as my web server. This is not in a
PirateBox or Byzantium system, but Raspberry Pi with Raspbian OS,
broadcasting the web server content to connected clients by Wi-Fi.

The Pi is not connected to the Internet in this application. Attempts by
connected clients to reach Internet hosts are just redirected to this
local web server.

The developer of the Pancake server suggested some configurations that
he believed would work around the Apple issue. We tried these conf
changes at the Byzantium meetup on 2013-09-28 without benefit.

Using Kismet, we examined the frames emitted by iOS as it attempted to
connect with Apple's systems (which include long, randomized URLs). We
found this data strange and interesting, but it didn't immediately lead
to a solution. Thank you Ben and Hax for your patience and effort.

Today I used Lighttpd instead of Pancake and configured it as shown in
the above link on the PirateBox forum. I have not yet looked at the
server logs, but the annoying "Log In" behavior is gone and the issue
appears to be resolved.
