Dear Friend,
This year in America, kids will smoke nearly 900
million packs of cigarettes, generating nearly
$2 billion in revenue for Big Tobacco.
Senator Tom Harkin and Sen. Dianne Feinstein want
to change that. They are currently proposing a $1
increase in the federal cigarette tax, generating
revenue to fund cancer prevention, the National
Institutes of Health, the Center for Disease
Control and other vital health programs. This year,
the President's budget actually proposes cuts in
public health funding for the first time since 1982.
This proposal would be a win-win for America's kids.
First, it would commit badly needed funding for
cancer prevention activities. Second, increasing
the cigarette tax is proven to reduce smoking among
kids! It is estimated that increasing the cigarette
tax by $1 would decrease the rate of youth smoking
by 18%!
But this proposal needs your help if it is going to
pass and protect America's kids from the dangers of
tobacco.

this proposal to help protect our kids from tobacco.

legislators supporting the Harkin-Feinstein proposal to
increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by one dollar.
The current federal tax is only 39 cents per pack.

America's Kids will thank you.

family who would like to help protect our kids from
the dangers of smoking.
Thanks again for all your help,
