Dear Anti-smoke folks:

That would be wonderful!

Krannert Center has an upcoming performance sponsored jointly with the Canopy
Club. Frequently, the air is all but unbreatheable there. I hope they could
possibly become smoke-free, as they have music that would be of interest to
those who are unable to tolerate smoky air. We need to do something about the
smoking situation, in that venue particularly.

Crane Alley has a sign inside, "No Pipes, Cigars or Clove Cigarettes." Why
not white-out the word "clove?"

Governor Blagojevich needs to raise the cigarette tax urgently, in order to
provide price relief for gasoline. If the cigarette tax is increased, maybe
they can waive the sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel to help.

We need to get the students to put out less of another kind of smoke, that of
their automobile exhausts. The traffic problem on campus has becvome
serious. At present rates of consumption, it is very likely that the current
generation of students will live to see the day when all nateral petroleum
will have been consumed; that is, if the cigarette smoke does not succumb them
first!

The C-U MTD needs to float a major bond issue and levy an impact fee on motor
vehicles, rather than increase property taxes, to pay for service at least at
15-minute intervals for all off-campus routes.

My car was in shop this week, and I had difficulty getting to Parkland on MTD
to attend the C-U Smokefree meeting there.

We need to take action on these matters immediately, without any further ado!

George R. Carlisle, Jr.
