The recent article on the magnitude of the cardiovascular effects of
second hand smoke should stimulate and create an opportunity for the
Alliance members to challenge their local policy makers to accept the
gravity and significance of this state of the art scientific
publication by Barnoya and Glantz in order to encourage rapid
consideration and passage (without delays from "study sessions" or
"task forces,") of smoke free ordinance. The damage done to the
cardiovascular system and the levated risk of 30% should be a major
source of quick policy action on the part of CU local policy makers ..
There no more if, thens, or buts!

There are positive or neutral economic impacts of smoke free ordinances
on the restaurant and bar business across the country and around the
world. There are devastating negative health impacts on the adult and
pediatric polulations as well as women (breast cancer being the latest
scientific evidence) and on populations with special health needs.

I should hope that the CU local policy makers will stop beating around
the bush and take immediate action with the passage of a strong
ordinance in accordance with their obligation ot protect the health and
welfare of the people they serve and in accordance with evidence-based
science findings.

Keep up the great work CU Smoke Free Alliance!
