Subject: Stop trying to undermine the Global Tobacco Treaty!

Mr. Louis Camilleri
Altria Group, Inc.

Dear Mr Camilleri,

With the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) now
protecting more than 80% of the world's population and the U.N.
calling the treaty one of the most rapidly embraced treaties in
its history, it is clear that the movement for ratification and
implementation of the global tobacco treaty is strong and
growing. The treaty, currently ratified in 146 countries, will
save millions of lives and change the way the tobacco industry
operates around the world.

Governments around the world and the World Health Organization
have been very clear: the tobacco industry shall play no role in
health policy. Yet, it appears that you are desperate to find
ways to undermine the treaty's implementation.

In August, your corporation asked U.S. District Court Judge
Gladys Kessler if you could continue to use the "low-tar" and
"light" labels outside the U.S. Just weeks earlier, Judge
Kessler had barred tobacco corporations from using these false
and misleading labels. Furthermore, the global tobacco treaty
prohibits the use of misleading descriptors, so, in effect, you
were asking our government to help your corporation evade
international law.

This act follows a global trend, whereby your corporation goes
to great lengths to undermine the implementation of the global
tobacco treaty.

How do you justify these actions which demonstrate such clear
disregard for human life and international law?

I look forward to your prompt reply.

Sincerely,
George Carlisle
