Thank you, Cheri, for quick and appropriate action. This is totally unacceptable in our enlightened times and town of Urbana and Champaign!

I saw this opinion letter today.

We took our two small children to the Urbana Park District Neighborhood Nights Concert and made our way to the information tables to see what else was going on in Urbana.

We were handed a flier advertising the Urbana Blues, Brews and BBQ event to be held at Lincoln Square. The flier was a colorful graphic cartoon of a guitar-playing, shades-wearing alligator with a cigarette hanging out of its mouth. My 6-year-old looked at me and pointed out the cigarette. I was speechless.

The flier advertised the ticket price followed by "children under 13 free with adult," so it appeared to be geared towards families. The event is to help the city of Urbana celebrate its 175th birthday.

I am just dumbfounded that in this age of banning smoking in public places, along with the common knowledge of the health complications of smoking, the city would allow a flier like this to advertise a family event to celebrate its 175th anniversary.

I e-mailed the mayor and council members in Urbana a few weeks ago about this ad.

They told me by the time they saw the ad it was too late to change it and that it was supposed to look like the Blues Brothers.

They also said I was not the only one who complained.

  I agree with the editorial!
