MeshNetworks Inc. has gathered its Layer 2 mesh-networking protocols and
repackaged them as a set of libraries that can be licensed for use on
standards-based platforms, starting with the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN
standard. The move comes as the IEEE 802.11 working group prepares to
vote on whether or not to form a mesh networking task group at the IEEE
802 Plenary meeting in Orlando, Fla. Known for its pioneering work on
wireless mesh networking, MeshNetworks (Maitland, Fla.), has long
maintained that only a tight coupling between radio and routing protocol
can ensure robust mesh network performance. Its Layer 2 (link layer)
scheme relies on such metrics as received signal strength, error rates,
data rates indicating wireless link quality to derive the optimum route
within a network.
