The nodes do link wirelessly between them.
The green lines that you see at the map represent the wireless links.

You are wrong if you assume that to create a single wireless network the 
wireless radios needs to be in a-dhoc mode. You can create a wide 
wireless network with many nodes in infrastructure mode.
As said, there is much less internets than nodes.
