Bua in Concert, Presented by Piper's Hut Concert Series - 2/7 8:00 PM
<http://ucimc.org/content/bua-concert-presented-pipers-hut-concert-series>

A quartet comprised of some of America’s most talented young musicians, Bua
plays Irish traditional music with “a precision and intensity that is
rarely heard on this side of the Atlantic.” Their sound stands out among
modern bands in the genre by “keeping the music down the path of tradition”
and reminding listeners of such fondly-remembered greats as The Bothy Band
and Planxty. Critics write that Bua’s 2009 release, *An **Spealadóir,
“*features
all that is really good about traditional music.” It is no surprise that
Bua, taking their name from the Irish Gaelic word for victory, have quickly
risen to be one of America’s premier traditional Irish music ensembles.

Bua has performed at many of the top Irish festivals in North America
including the National Folk Festival, Lowell Folk Festival, Boston's Irish
Connections Festival, Milwaukee Irish Festival, Dublin Irish Festival,
Goderich Celtic Roots Festival and Bethlehem’s Celtic Classic. As
individuals they have shared the stage with a host of top Irish musicians
including Martin Hayes, David Munnelly, Liz Carroll, Len Graham, Paddy
Keenan, Larry Nugent, Pat Broaders, Dennis Cahill, John Williams and
Frankie Gavin.

Bill Margeson of the Irish American News writes: “Clearly, this group is
no locally-based collection of musicians trying to break out of Chicago.
This is a group that has established itself [both] individually and as a
group in the eyes and ears of the traditional community…As other bands
change, disband or simply fade away, the tradition is blessed by what seems
to be an inexhaustible pool of talent that comes to the front of the
stage. It is Bua’s time. Here they come.” http://pipers-hut.com

Black History Month Film Series: Sankofa - 2/14 6:00 PM
<http://www.ucimc.org/content/black-history-month-film-series-sankofa>In
honor of Black History Month, the IMC will be hosting a film series
celebrating African-American filmmakers. The first showing will be of the
1993 film Sankofa on Tuesday, February 14th at 6:00 PM. Admission will be
$3, with all proceeds going to IMC.

 Sankofa (1993) <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108041/>

>From Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankofa_%28film%29>:

The story follows Mona, a contemporary
model<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_%28person%29>,
as she is visited by spirits lingering in the Cape Coast
Castle<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Coast_Castle>in
Ghana <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghana> and travels to the past, where,
as a house servant named Shola she is constantly abused by her slave
masters. Nunu, an African-born field hand, and Shango, Shola's West
Indian<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Indian>love interest, all
continuously rebel against the slave system. For Nunu
this means direct conflict with her son (whose father is a white man)
benefiting from the system as a head slave. Inspired by Nunu and Shango's
determination to defy the system, Shola finally chooses to fight back
against her masters.
