Theremin. Pronounced "Terra-Meen". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin

My friend, Michael Scroggins http://emsh.calarts.edu/~aka was at an
experimental video conference in Moscow in the 1980s.
Theremin came up in conversation. Somebody said to him, "Oh, yes.
He's still alive. He lives near here."

You need to be a serious analogue circuit *artist* like Robert Moog to
build a good one. http://www.moogmusic.com
I attended Bob Moog's Memorial Celebration in 2005 and heard the story
of when, in the 1970's, Bob was called to New York to restore Clara
Rockmore's Theremin, which had been built in the 1930's by Theremin,
himself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clara_Rockmore Once he got it
restored, he watched Rockmore warming-up on it and his jaw dropped.
She was doing things with the instrument that he never thought were
possible.
The best Thereminists are violinists first.

I worked in Asheville, NC from 2005 to 2007. In 2006, we bought my son,
Nate (See him at the Bike Co-Op) an electric violin. I took him on a
tour of the Moog Music factory. The sales lady let him plug his violin
into the Moogerfooger stack in the demo room. He tried out a Moog
Theremin, too.
