[Imc-makerspace] know of any ubuntu network tools that do not suck?

Actually, you're not far off.
The proper place is the Free Computer Help Desk, which does take place 
in the MakerSpace
on Tuesday afternoons (Tomorrow!) from 3-5PM and on Sundays from 2-4.
