PEACE TECH:
Artists Seize Power of New Technology to Mark Ten Year Anniversary of
Nation at War

Artists across the world are marking the tenth anniversary of our
nation at war and employing new media as an outlet for creative
action. Utilizing technology that wasn't even invented at the
beginning of the war, this new generation of activists is using
vidding, Facebook, twitter, and interactive maps to connect to each
other and spark a new movement for peace.

Just as Twitter was essential to connecting protestors in the Arab
Spring uprisings, multiple online platforms are connecting the
grassroots movement to end the war in the US.10 Years and Counting,
which focuses on arts and creative action, is employing event mapping
to amplify the presence of groups large and small across the nation –
bringing them together under a virtual, online umbrella.

While the effect of this new movement and many of its actions are
global, the events are local. From Eastsound, Washington and
Charlottesville, Virginia to Framingham, Massachusetts and Boca Raton,
Florida, many Americans who oppose the war are turning to creative
action to reflect on a decade of war and inspire a peaceful tomorrow.
They are hosting art openings, showing plays, eating dinner at poets
for peace, and hanging public art pieces while connecting to a growing
international movement.

Some examples of the new movement's creative actions for peace include:

On September 21st, thousands of artists throughout the world created a
vision of peace with chalk, part of the annual Chalking 4 Peace
actions.
Across the country in Santa Rosa, A Thousand Poets for Peace brings
neighbors together for an evening of poetry, music, and food.

In San Francisco, Blood Bone Elegy is a suite of eighteen color
mezzotints depicting the outbreak of war. The series is constructed as
a visual narrative in three parts: Passion, Outbreak, and Survival. In
The Absence of Passion, another suite of fifteen mezzotint portraits,
are presented reflecting the trauma of warfare.

In Bloomington, IN writers are presenting Bomb/Shell: 8 short plays
about war and peace. These eight ten-minute plays center on the theme
of war and peace. Playwrights include Jesse Eisenberg and Jeff Daniels
among others.

In Boca Raton, FL Hammock Pointe Elementary School will be hanging
"Windchimes of Peace" in the school's gardens for all the 800+
students and parents to hear the sounds of peace and harmony.

In Salem OR the Chemeketa Community College Art Gallery presents Where
Are We Now? Artists Reflect on America 10 Years After 9/11, a memory
project presentation and discussion.
