Hey everyone,

Thanks for stopping by today.   A pretty productive meeting.  Some notes
follow ...

Attendees: Chris, Brian Williams, Jeff, Tom, Gergana, Brady, Erich, John

*) Opens
   - Makerfaire 2013: need to start planning; Chris will e-mail keystaff
list; whoever wants to participate, please reply to that e-mail
   - FYI: have a webcam installed in the space that is currently recording
   - IMC programming and vision meeting next Sunday (Sept 16): Chris will
send an e-mail to the list with details
   - msp430 launch pad board: a better/cheaper option than the arduino;
consider investing in a bunch, maybe do our beginner classes with them?
     #) need to consider losing the community support (which arduino has);
no shield
     #) helps us stage stuff out: use this for beginner; then move to the
arduino for more advanced topics
     #) consider using this for the DCEO Eliminate the Digital Divide
workshop
*) Membership/Finance Update
   - IMC bookeeper is no longer a full-time position; will now contract
with outside party
   - Makerspace is still doing ok in terms of funds; Chris will let us know
when he gets the next report
*) RFID keylock discussion
   - Have some ideas but need to focus our energy; will start planning on
Wednesday, during open hours
   - the group has decided on spending approval up to $100 for this project
*) Past events:
   - End of Summer Make-a-tion: awesome times!  we should do it again next
summer
   - Outta the mouths of babes play-doh workshop: made touch-pad
controller, eventually using the drum machine
   - Innovation LLC workshop: did a quick soldering workshop, plus some
arduino work
     #) had some issues because the computers did not all have the arduino
software, we don't all know the passwords, etc.
     #) Chris is setting up a provisioning system for the makerspace
computers (for Linux) - he should have it running within the next week or so
*) Upcoming/potential events:
   - DCEO Eliminate the Digital Divide Grant
     #) we're back in on the grant!  still in the scheduling stages, need
to figure out what the grant will allow us to do; Chris will update us once
stuff is finalized
   - Jimmy Rodgers will be resident guest at Allen Hall/Unit One Oct 14 to
18
     #) Jeff will contact the Unit One director
   - UIUC IEEE 2012/2013 workshops
     #) Welcome, Brady!  IEEE will be doing monthly workshops, first one
next week; they will be open to doing a field trip to the makerspace to do
a workshop here
   - UC2B/Volo
     #) Billy who works at Volo, the company that is installing the UC2B
fiber in Urbana, stopped by open hours last week
     #) interested in working with us and teaching the community about
using computers, etc.;
     #) first, we need to decide on when we'll be doing these basic skills
workshops, who will organize/staff them; we can consider pulling in GSLIS;
     #) should talk to UC2B/Volo first, decide on an outline, then try to
pull in the GSLIS folks
     #) Erich will let Billy know we're interested and go from there
   - sewing co-op: Rose is talking up the makerspace to the other co-op
folks;
     #) we should keep up the conversation with them about having the
sewing co-op host open hours and use the space
   - Week-long summer camp: maybe hire someone, or get one of the campus
groups to help us
     #) targeted to kids/teens from the community
   - would be nice to get the IMC sign replaced; maybe do a neon workshop
and create it?
     #) if we want to do something, need to put together a proposal and
submit it to the IMC board - oct/nov timeframe;
     #) John will follow-up with Jeff and Tom on first step, will let the
list know once planning starts
